Digging out the Secrets in the Secret Garden

摘要：Everyone processes a secret garden at the bottom of his or her heart. In Frances Hodgson Burnettrsquo;s greatest work, The Secret Garden, opened by introducing the main character Mary Lennox, a sour-faced and quite contrary girl, who becomes an orphan because of a terrible cholera epidemic and is sent to her uncle. It is at her unclersquo;s, she finds out the secret garden as well as her strange cousin. It is in the secret garden, her revival with the garden and regains happiness. The Secret Garden, is titled as major contribution to childrenrsquo;s literature not only because of the story is up rather strange, but for it reveals the unique value of secrets to children, which is only a tip of the iceberg on childrenrsquo;s psyche. Postman Neil said “No secrets, any childhood” in his The Disappearance of Childhood. What kind of secrets do children process? What do secrets mean to them? Frances Hodgson Burnettrsquo;s classic work, The Secret Garden, is considered as her best-known work as well as a major contribution to childrenrsquo;s literature. Adrian Gunther extolled it “one of the great icons of childrenrsquo;s literature”, and the U.S. National Education Association named it one of “Teachersrsquo; Top 100 Books for Childrenrsquo;rsquo;. It also makes her become one of the most significant writers immediately after being published in America during the 20th century.

The Secret Garden, is titled as major contribution to childrenrsquo;s literature not only because of the story is up rather strange, but for it reveals the unique value of secrets to children, which is only a tip of the iceberg on childrenrsquo;s psyche. In the novel, before the secret, the two children, Mary and Colin, are not only in poor health but also with distorted personality. After the secret, both of them are totally recovered. In the whole process, we can never deny the impact of secret. Postman Neil said “No secrets, no childhood” in his The Disappearance of Childhood.

The growth of children always attracted much attention from parents to society.
