Briefly on the Suspense and Inter-structural Characterization in Rebecca
摘要:Rebecca is a novel written by the British author Daphne du Maurier. It is regarded as one of the most famous gothic novels featured with suspense. Scholars and critics both from home and abroad have already been diving into study of suspense in the novel. Numerous literary papers and reviews on its genre and character analysis have published on academic journals, thesis websites, magazines, blogs, etc.. However, in the studies of character analysis, most scholars prefer focusing on excavation of Rebecca, one of the heroines who is already dead but winding through the novel from the beginning to the end to analyzing the other heroine, the narrator. However, in the novel, Rebecca and the narrator are closely tied by the setting of suspense. The thesis briefly discusses the suspense and inter-structural characterization in Rebecca.

This thesis mainly discusses inter-structural characterization of the two leading characters, Rebecca and the narrator “I” by means of the writing technique, suspense. There are a few works and literary reviews from which I can draw lessons.
For the background information of my thesis, there are tremendous criticism, papers and books on Rebecca for reference. Literary critics have already made comments on the novel and scholars have studied it not only from its genre and character analysis, but also from its social background. In Daphne du Maurier Writing, Identity and Gothic Imagination published by Avirl Horner amp; Sue Zlosnik in 1974, both of them study it from the perspective of female gothic, and both of them (1974, p.59-60) agree that “Rebecca is a gothic novel, and the characteristics of it are terror and suspense, usually set in a gloomy old castle or monastery”. They make a comment on its genre on a large scale, which can be used to enrich the background information of the thesis. One is Daphne du Maurier: The Secret Life of the Renowned Storyteller, written by Margaret Forster and published by Chatto amp; Windus in 1993. Rebecca became popular as soon as it was published. It is distinctly characterized by its gothic feature and suspense design. As for suspense design, there are various resources that are useful. Conflict and Suspense written by James Scott Bell has been published by Writerrsquo;s Digest Books in 2012. It introduces suspense design in the novel, which is useful for comprehending suspense. The Application of Skills of Suspense in Rebecca written by Zhou Xiong and Chen Yuan has been published on the Journal of Chongqing Electric Power College in 2009. This essay tries to analyze and expound the skills of suspense in Rebecca in order to help readers better appreciate it and its artistic effects. It helps me to better understand the setting of suspense in the novel and share information of the functions of suspense. Another essay published in the Journal of Social Sciences, is called On Suspense: Theory and Consciousness, written by Chen Yu. Other books and papers are also helpful to understand suspense, such as Brooks. P.rsquo;s Reading for the Plot: Design and Intention in Narrative, published by Harvard University Press in 1984, Gerrig. Rrsquo;s Suspense in the Absence of Uncertainty, published on Journal of Memory and Language, Yanal. Rrsquo;s The Paradox of Suspense, published by British Journal of Aesthetics, etc..
Some essays and works on characterization are indispensable. In bibliography, there is Xu Xiaohuarsquo;s Redefine Rebecca from the View of Feminism on the journal of Foreign Languages and Their Teaching in 2003-09. This essay combines the character analysis and social background, which provides me with depth understanding of Rebecca. It can be used in analyzing characterization in the thesis. One named Literary Symbolization for Female Characters---on Daphne du Maurierrsquo;s Rebecca, written by Chen Xiao-xiao has been published on Journal Liaoning Normal University, 2006-06. And the essay written by Lin Bin, is named Female Gothic Studies in the West and Feminist Theories of Gender and Genre on Journal of Foreign Languages, 2005-02. These essays focus on persona in the novel, which give accessibility to the understanding of the two heroines that my thesis discusses.
In the thesis, suspense works as a bridge to connect the characterization of the two heroines and references about narrative theories are necessary. For examle, A Companion to Narrative Theory written by James Phelan and Peter J. Rabinow and has been published by Wiley-Blackwell in 2008. Recent Theories of Narrative by Martin Wallace, has been published by Cornell University Press in 1986.
These references are helpful to the thesis, most of which are on the suspense design or the analysis of the specific character, Rebecca. And the thesis will discuss the suspense and inter-structural characterization in the novel.
