A Study of Educational Games Theories and
Their Applications in EFL Teaching
Abstract:With the development of social information, new technology and media have attracted more peoplersquo;s attention. Meanwhile, people gradually pay more attention to the quality and effectiveness of childrenrsquo;s education. In this context, educational games ,as new factors of means of teaching ,became such significant roles of language teaching and learning, especially for English as a Foreign Language Teaching(EFL Teaching). Playing games is the nature of children, therefore, itrsquo;s enjoyable and pleasant for them to understand and learn through games. As a new teaching media, educational games have the features of both fun and educational significance. However, compared with the traditional games in EFL Teaching class, educational games emphasize much on the leading role of children themselves.During the eight years from 2008-2015, the tendency of studying educational games theories and their applications has risen to a stage. It has been one of the hotspots over education filed and technical filed. A large number of articles, including magazines and Master of Education PhD thesis, have discussed the significance and future development of educational games theories as well as their application and practice.
As the human-oriented education idea and concept of happy learning enjoyed popular supports, educational games theories have become symbols of advanced teaching and learning. Educational games are games explicitly designed with educational purposes, or which have incidental or secondary educational value. More researches and studies have proved that educational games have a positive impact on studentsrsquo; growth of individuals, especially the capacity of language learning. Nowadays,in EFL Teaching class, using educational games as auxiliary teaching means, teachers pay more attention to studentsrsquo; learning interest and the self-motivation to learn. We can say that this has been one of the EFL Teaching forms.
This thesis lsquo;s main purpose is to study the origin and development of educational games theories abroad and at home, thus to consider how to apply these theories in language learning class, especially in EFL Teaching class. Advanced computer technology is an opportunity for the development of educational games. Therefore, based on the current situation in China and foreign countries, the study will analyze the future development and prospect .
