A Study on New Color Words from the Perspectives of Cognitive Metaphor and Metonymy

Abstract

Color is a natural phenomenon that exists everywhere and is closely linked with human life. Since early times, lots of studies on color words have been done at home and abroad. As time goes by, color words are gradually developing with more and more new elements adding into. Recently, the so-called new color words, such as naughty orange, passion blue, 优雅紫, 胜利红 and so on, become a hit, especially in commercial industries including electronics, cosmetics, clothes and so on. Compared with traditional color words, this kind of color words has more human, emotional characteristics and is more abstract with rich meanings.

As cognitive linguistic booms, it is of great significance to do studies from the perspective of cognitive tools. Thus, this essay aims to study on new color words from the perspectives of cognitive metaphor and metonymy. It also presents a semantic analysis of new color words both in Chinese and English to explain its structure and characteristics, origin and background as well as the classification and functions. And a pragmatic study on new color words will state its popularity, advantages and disadvantages. Some implications on new color words will be expressed in conclusion part

1. The definition of cognitive metaphor and metonymy

1.1 The definition of cognitive metaphor

Traditionally, metaphor was regarded as a figure of speech, which can be traced back to as early as Aristotle(1954) who defined metaphor in terms of deviation from ordinary usage, “Metaphor” consists in giving the thing a name that belongs to something else”. Chen Wangdao(1932) also defined it in this way:
