Animal Idioms and Cultural Differences between English and Chinese
Thesis Statement
Idioms are unique and intrinsic expressions based on a nationrsquo;s long period of use. The formation of idiom is formed under different geographical environment, customs, habits and history culture. Any language contains a large number of idioms, so here are no expections both in English and Chinese. And the animal idioms are an important component part of idioms.
Because of the history, social life and some other influences, English and Chinese reflect both the similarities and differences between eastern and western culture. For a long time, in the idiom research, there are many linguists at home and abroad have conducted studies of animal idioms, like Professor Deng Yanchang (1989) made a related study about culture and language, Professor Zhao Jing (2007) compared cultural differences through the images of the idiom, Professor Zhang Jinghua (2000) made a constrative study about the connotation of the images of the animals. These studies are of great help in laiding a foundation for the researchers on idioms later on.Under such a research background, itrsquo;s still necessary to conduct more studies of English and Chinese idioms from the perspectives of culture. And this thesis show there are more differences than similarities in animals about some typical animl species, knowing the denotation and connotation meaning of these animal idioms to be familiar with the cultural differences. Since the trend of cross-cultural, comparing the English and Chinese animal idioms and find out whether the differences between English and Chinese cultures are the main cause for the abstacles in understanding English and Chinese animal idioms. Learn animal idioms through cultural comparision is of great help in using it appropriately and proficiently.
Purpose and Significance of the Study
As we all know, every language is the repersentative of culture, reflecting and embodying culture. It can survive only by being rooted in the cultural environment, which makes it could not exist independently without culture. Actually, culture penetrates into many aspects of a nation. We can acquire much if we learn about the culture, not only in the culture itself, but also in the economy and polity. Culture is colorful and it is full of mystery. There are many facts leading the culture to come into being.
Today, now that the global world is evolved more and more severly, we can study divergent cultures by this chance.
It is no wonder that the environment cultivates the culture. To be frank, is the language reflected the national culture, isnrsquo;t it? The answer is certain. Although there exists some similar aspects in English and Chinese culture, the differences are more distinctive and striking. Chinese are influenced deeply by Confucianism and “ loyal, filial, respectful, faithful ” is the abiding thesis in the long history. And in feudal society, Chinese carried out the policy of patriarchy which has affected the courtesy among a part of Chinese today. Moreover, Chinese are obedient to the the law of nature. These characteristics shape a ethnical and moral Chinese culture. Compared with the Chinese, English formed their culture by experiencing the process of warfares, reformations and the alternative of dynasties. Therefore , English emphasize the individual right and freedom. They advocate the realization of humanity and sensibility. Because of the totally different original history, geographical environment, social custom, belief which form two types of culture. We may feel confused if we enter a new environment which we are unfamiliar with at the first time. Therefore, it is preoccupational to study and observe the differences among cultures in case of some misunderstandings.
Fortunately, we have the access to know a strange country through animal idioms. Studying the animal idioms, we can learn the distinctive differences both in culture and value awareness between English and Chinese. Since both Chinese and English have a large number of animal idioms. It is known to all that some animal idioms show the same meanings while others show totally different. Study the differences in animal idioms can not only help people understand a nationrsquo;s culture, but also motivate people to study the language well. Hence, through the study of Chinese and English animal idioms, learners are capable of distinguishing the cultural differences and having a clearer understanding of them and appropriately use them in the correct language environment as well.
