2. Literature review
2.1 Concept map vs. Mind map
2.1.1 Definition of concept map
A concept map is a way of representing relationships between ideas, images, or words. In concept maps, nudes are used to represent concepts and conjunctions the relationships between concepts. Generally, concepts, like ideas, words and information, are put in boxes or circles, and arrows together with lines are used to link the boxes and circles. According to Joseph D.Novak, the father of concept maps, there are mainly five elements in a concept map: concept, relationship, level, connection lines and conjunctions, crossing connection lines. Respectively, concept means common rules in objects or events; relationships between concepts should be meaningful and valid; level indicates that concepts should go from the one with broadest sense to the most specific one; lines are used to connect different concepts and to mark the significance of the relations between concepts.
2.1.2 Definition of mind map
A mind map is used to visually organize information. It has an organized structure that radiates from the center using lines, symbols, words and images.Mind maps encourage people to do relational thinking and “think outside of the box”.They are helpful in carrying out activities such as brainstorming. Tony Buzan is the person who invented and popularized mind maps. According to Buzan, there are four essential characteristics in a mind map:the focus on the central image that represents the subject being mapped; themes that radiate from the central image like branches; these branches have a key image or key word written above the connecting lines; these branches have are connected by lines.
2.1.3 Difference between concept map and mind map
The difference between concept map and mind map can be addressed for three main aspects: focus, structure and use. Concept maps focus on the connections between concepts while mind maps focus on the only central concept and get other themes expanded from it; Concept maps are presented in network structures while mind maps are in tree structures; Concept maps are used to create a systematic view of different concepts and their interrelationships and are extensively applied in teaching and learning while mind maps are used to aid in brainstorming and radioactive thinking and are relatively narrowly applied, mostly in businesses and schools. Other than these three main aspects,it is noted that mind maps usually involve colors and images to make them more visually stimulating so mind maps appear to be more casual while concept maps generally involve boxes and circles.
