A Study of Cocorsquo;s Subtitle Translation From the Perspective of Skopos Theory
摘要:在经济全球化趋势逐渐增强的今天,中国将继续加大改革开放,各国经济、文化相互交融。虽然国产电影渐渐崛起,开始主导国内电影市场,但外国电影仍然占据国内电影市场重要份额,并承载着文化传播的重要使命。为了使国内观众能够观赏外国电影并尽可能从中了解外国文化,取其精华取其糟粕,除了电影配音外,电影字幕成为最重要的沟通手段。
本文采用案例分析的研究方法对《寻梦环游记(Coco)》的字幕翻译进行个案分析。《寻皮克斯动画工作室电影《寻梦环游记》在中国市场大获成功。本文从目的论视角出发对该电影字幕翻译所适用的翻译策略进行分析。电影字幕翻译策略的使用是为了达到字幕翻译的目的,使得观众更好地了解外国电影。同时,本文指出并更正了在影片中出现的极个别的翻译处理欠妥的字幕翻译。

Abstract: As economic globalization increasingly strengthens, China, nowadays, will continue to reform and open up, and the economics and culture of all countries is interconnected. Although domestic movies of China are gradually rising up and beginning to dominate the domestic moviersquo;s market, foreign movies are still playing a significant role in Chinarsquo;s movie market, shouldering the important mission of cultural communication. To help Chinese audiences appreciate foreign movies and understand foreign cultures as much as possible, taking the essence and discarding the dregs, apart from movie dubbing, movie subtitle has become the most important communication method.
The paper analyzes and studies the subtitle translation of Coco through the method of case study from the angle of skopos theory. Coco, a movie published by Pixar Animation Studio, proves to be a huge success in Chinarsquo;s movie market. Therefore, the major concern of this paper is to analyze the translation strategies used under the guidance of skopos theory to meet the goals of the subtitle translation, that is, to facilitate Chinese audiences to well understand this foreign movie. Meanwhile, few inappropriate translated texts are pointed out and corrected in this paper.

Nowadays, globalization has become an irreversible trend of this era. Against the background of this, the economics and politics of nearly all countries are interdependent, the degree of countriesrsquo; exchanges and collisions has been increasingly deepening, and the world is totally within our reach. The entertainment industry is of no exception. A huge number of foreign films have been entering into Chinarsquo;s movie market, most of our audiences can only understand foreign movies with the help of Chinese subtitles due to their language limitations. Therefore, subtitle translation has been attached to great importance. Considering this, foreign moviersquo;s subtitle translation should transfer the connotations to our audiences. For the reason that subtitle translation is not just about conversion between two languages but a process of culture delivery, information distortion caused by cultural differences must be avoided.
Animated movies have lively and vivid scenes and story lines, which bring much visual and audio enjoyment to the audiences and play an essential role in global cultural exchanges and transmission. Among all, US animated films boast global reputation. Those of Disney and DreamWorks Studios represent worldrsquo;s highest level, loved by a wide range of audiences. Coco, released in November, 2017, is dubbed as “best animated production within 10 years by We Media. The movie tells about a wonderful journey of a music-loving boy and a distressed singer in a mysterious ghost world. The movie is so engaging and moving that it leads you into a unreachable world and then back to the people around. The author searched the keyword “Coco” in CNKI and found 56 pieces of relevant literature, most of whose topic is theme analysis, revealing the secret of the boyrsquo;s success and revelation to Chinese movies, a few of which analyze from the perspective of narratology and metaphor. Few literature analyze the movie from the angle of pragmatics. Therefore, the paper will use skopos as a theoretical tool to analyze Cocorsquo;s official subtitle translation.
