A Study on the Efficiency of Memorizing Vocabulary in Morning Reading

Vocabulary, as an important part of language, has caught the eyes of many researchers home and abroad. Many studies pointed out the importance of vocabulary in language learning. Some researchers declared that reading aloud can help to memorize vocabulary.

一、文献综述

This literary review includes the following aspects: the first part is about the definition of vocabulary. The second part is about the importance of vocabulary in English learning based on the New National English Curriculum Standard 2011 and related researches. The third part is about the relationship between reading aloud and memory.

2.1 The Definition of Vocavulary

As one of the three essential elements in language, vocabulary is an indispensable part in English learning. Katamba (2005) defined words as “the smallest meaningful linguistic unit which can be used independently. It is a form that cannot be divided into any smaller units that can be used on their own to convey meaning”. The Oxford Online Dictionary (2010) gave the definition of word: “a single distinct meaningful element of speech or writing, used to form sentences with others”. And Harmer (1990) even compared the vocabulary to “important organs” as well as “blood and flesh”.

2.2 The Importance of Vocabulary in English Language Learning

Famous linguistic River believed that the key to a successful use a foreign language is to master enough vocabulary: “Without vocabulary, there wonrsquo;t be the ideas of to use the structure and functions one has learnt.” Wilkins (1972) pointed the significance of vocabulary: “Without grammar very little can be conveyed; without vocabulary nothing can be conveyed.” Another researcher Zimmerman (1998) said, “Vocabulary is central to language and is of great significance to language learners”.

2.2.1 The Demand Vocabulary in New NECS2011

In English language learning, vocabulary plays a definitely important role because without a solid vocabulary, one cannot convey his message efficiently or express his ideas in both oral as well as in written forms. The lack of sufficient vocabulary will bring obstacles in every process of language learning.
