Great Expectation in David Copperfield

—— Moral Ideals of Charles Dickens

Abstract

Simple and unadorned, people like Agnes, Aunt Betsey, and Mrs. Peggotty use their own personalities to interpret the essence of human nature, and to bring warmness, enlightenment and inspirations to those who have suffered or have been suffering or have gone astray. By way of presenting their personalities through a childrsquo;s eyes, Charles Dickens describes his own ideas towards what virtues a person should possess. With great sympathy and compassion, Charles Dickens is rapt in depicting those miserable immature lives; and ultimately, he succeeds in finishing this heart-shaking story: David Copperfield. Consequently, this book is also the quintessence of his moral ideals; at the mean time, the characters are the carrier which powerfully embodies Dickensrsquo; humanitarian spirit, which fuses good nature with experiences, beliefs and zeitgeist.
