Abstract
Phonics of English has aroused wide attention in language teaching in the west, but most of the research objects are those who learn English as the mother tongue, instead of those who regard English as the second language. Based on previous research findings on phonics, this paper divide 60 grade three students in Hangzhou into two groups, one taught with traditional teaching method, another taught with phonics, each group having pre-test and post-test in order to assess whether the vocabulary learning level has been raised, and thus to observe the relations between phonics and vocabulary learning. The research indicates that phonics is of benefit to vocabulary learning, and, according to the research findings, come up with some suggestions on how to learn vocabulary better with the help of phonics.

1.1 Definition of Phonics Instruction
There are different opinions about the definition of Phonics. Various scholars come up with different views from different angles and aspects.
Some hold the view that Phonics is a teaching method which enables students to realize the letter-sound correspondences and to apply this systematic knowledge into recognizing words (Adams,1990; Harris amp; Hodges,19995; Stahl, Duffy-Hester, amp; Stahl, 1998). Similarly, Armbruster and Osborn (2001) stated that Phonics is a teaching method which helps students to realize the relations between graphemes and phonemes. Venezky (1999) holds that Phonics mainly describes those letters or symbols which translate codes for phonemes. From the point of philosophical point of view, Phonics is an abstract set of systematic rules which contributes to translating letters into sounds, a set of rules might mastered but not understood by people, while from the psychological point of view, Phonics is a rule system which can only be mastered by learning, and from the teaching point of view, Phonics is a rule system which can only be acquired by teaching (Steven L. Strauss, 2005).
Above all, various scholars give different definitions of Phonics, but they come to a same idea about the fact that Phonics emphasizes the master of letter-sound correspondences. Apparently, Phonics is a kind of teaching method which concerns letter-sound correspondences, which helps people to realize and understand the relations or rules among letters, letter combination, and their pronunciations. This teaching method helps students to spell and pronounce English words directly and correctly with the help of letter-sound correspondences, instead of other pronunciation symbols, such as International Phonetic Alphabet.
