--by analyzing the Paradoxical Attitudes of Main Characters

摘要：On The Loons, the literary work on cultural marginalized races in Canadian society written by Margaret Laurence, the scholars both at home and abroad have made various in-depth researches. In this literature review, the introduction of relative concepts and theories that are presented in literature at home and abroad will be given. Generally, the research subjects are embodied into 4 categories: cultural analysis on marginalization reflected in The Loons, writing techniques of the story, the specific historical background of Canada, and the analysis on the themes provided by the novel.

The Loons is a typical literary work that reflects the awkward situation of marginalized races in Canadian society. The miserable experience of Piquette Tonnerre, a Metis girl, who searches for the white Canadianrsquo;s mainstream cultural acceptance raised assorted insights into this novel. The literature cited in my thesis can mainly be classified into 4 categories: the historical origin of multiculturalism and cultural marginalization in Canada, the cultural analysis theories, especially those developed after the second world war, the analysis on characters in novels, and literature criticism theory.

As the title of my thesis indicates, the discussion of acculturation in Canadian society will start from analyzing on the duality of narratorrsquo;s attitude, in which the historical background of marginalized race will be discussed. According to disparate perspectives, the literature of this part refers to the specific historical backdrop in Canada, the cultural situation all over the world after the world war II, and the text analysis of The Loons. The Marginalized World--the Research on Post-Colonial Theory of Homi K. Bhabha by Huo-Jin discusses the concept of marginalization after the world war II as well as itrsquo;s influence on post-war literature literature. Most literature analyze the historical background of aboriginals and cultural mosaic in Canada, including the following works: Canadian Native Self--Determination Policy and Itrsquo;s Remaining by Ding Jian-ming, A Distinct Ethnic Group among the Aboriginals in Canada——the Meacute;tis by Wang Zhu, The Society and Aulture of Canada by Wu Fei, research on multiculturalism--illustrated by the case of Canada by Wang Jun-fang.

To make in-depth analysis of cultural backdrop of marginalized races, it is requisite to discuss the cultural phenomenon on the basis of the three cultural situations after the second world war: monoculturalism, cultural relativism and multiculturalism, which are illustrated in Transmission of Culture and Literary Images by Le Dai-yu and Zhang Hui. In the discussion of cultural interaction after the second world war, my thesis will try to find the relation between cultural identity and racism in the history of Canadian society, during this process the techniques of novel criticism are necessary. A handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature written by Wilfred Guerin illustrate several common literary critical approaches systematically.

For the literature above only provide supportive analysis of historical background of the cultural mosaic in Canadian society, professional analysis theories for the plot, the psychological and linguistic descriptions of character are inevitable, especially from the perspective of Piquette, the round character in this novel. In this part, my thesis can cite supportive theory in The Aspects of Novel by E.M. Forster.
