1.Introduction
CarsonMcCullers(1917-1969)wasanoutstandingAmericansouthernwriterinthetwentiethcenturyafterWilliamFaulknerwhohadbeenconsideredAmericasgreatestnovelist.McCullerswasversatileandprolificandherworkswereusuallylabelledasSouthernGothicbecausemostofhernovelsweresetinsouthinwhichtheloneliness,alienationandhumanlovebecamethefocusofherfiction.ThereisnodoubtthatshemadeimmenseachievementsinAmericanliterature.
TheBalladofSadcafisoneofweightedworksofCarsonMcCullers.InTheBalladofSadcaf,SheusedanunnamedSoutherntownandthreeeccentriccharacters.MissAmeliaEvanswasastrongwomanwhetherinappearanceorinhercapablewaysofworking.SincethearrivalofLymanWill,shechangedalot.ButwhenMarvinMacyreappeared,allthingchanged.TheformermasculinecousinLymanWillsfollowedaroundMacylikeadogandarousedhislatentloveforMacy.Loveisimportantforthembuttheirproblemisinsoluble.AmeliaandLymanwereinessencebisexualandtheyendedinpainandeffortlessness.
ThoughagreatnumberofscholarsstartedtostudyMcCllerssworksafterthepublicationofhernovelssince1940,mostofthemtendedtoanalyseherGothicwritingstyleandothercommonthemes,whichwereseverelylackedoforiginality.IntheBalladofSadcaf,thoughsheusedthisGothicwritingstyle,suchkindofthemehasbeenrepeatedmorethanonce.SothisthesistriestostudythisnovelfromtheperspectiveofandrogynybecauseafterdeepdiggingofhernovelwefoundthatinTheBalladofSadcaf,sheusedthetheoryofFeminismfromtheperspectiveofgenderidentity.Feminism,toalargeextenthadcloseinteractionwithidealgenderinandrogynouscharactersinTheBalladofSadcaf.WiththeawakeningofFeministinmale-dominatedsocietyandthewidespreadofhomosexualphenomenoninwesterncountry,itisofgreatsignificancetoconductanalysisoftheIdealGenderinAndrogynousCharactersinTheBalladoftheSadcaf.SothisthesiswillattempttoanalyseongenderrolefromtheperspectiveofandrogynytheoryinTheBalladofSadcafandthendiscussthetheoryindetail.Bydoingso,readerscancomprehensivelydigthetruesocialmeaninginMcCullerssworksandcanunderstandthenecessityofreadingMcCllersworksfrommulti-perspectives.

ThetermandrogynywasfirstappearedSymposium(Plato105)andgotpopularinNineteenandearlytwentiethcentury.Forhuman,itisusedtodescribeapersonwhodoesnotfitintothetypicalmasculinefemininegenderrolesoftheirsociety.
