Collision and Compatibility between Chinese and American Culture (family education): A Study of the Joy Luck Club
Abstract:
The family education is related to a personrsquo;s life. Itrsquo;s vital to the development of each individual as well as a country. In The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan describes the conflicts between the mothers and daughters to show us different family education, family lifestyle, etc. in the end, the two different family educations merge together. Nowadays, with the development of globalization, more contacts require an effective way of communication to narrow the gap between different two family educations. In addition, Chinese families have become increasing concerned about the all-round development of their development of their children, and therefore place more emphases on how they as families educate their children. Consequently, in this thesis, through systematic study of The Joy Luck Club by analyzing what are the conflicts and why they have conflicts, I would like to dissect the main reasons of cultural conflicts and find proper ways in blending family educations.

1. Research background:
The Joy Luck Club, a masterpiece of Chinese American writer Amy Tan. There are totally sixteen stories of four Chinese-immigrant women and their American-born daughters. In these stories, conflicts and discords appear more than harmony and concert. The novel through the description of the lifestyle between the four pairs of mothers and daughters, presents the difference between Chinese and American cultures to readers. Through the conflicts between mothers and daughters reflects the difference between Chinese and American family education. In the end, the understanding between mothers and daughters, the compatibility between Chinese and American culture, turns up and gives us space to think.
The Joy Luck Club, the debut of Amy Tan, hit the world after published in 1988. Its advent opened the door of the United States mainstream literary circles for Chinese literary works. Not only did it become one of the four best sellers in US in 1988, but it ranked first on the lists of the New York Times even lasted for nine months. Moreover, it won a number of awards and was adapted into a film. With no doubt, this new novel got mixed notices. By reading and summarizing documents and materials, it is not hard to find that researchers have shown a great deal of interests in various themes contained in the novel, studying a very wide range. Especially in the field of family education, it got a really strong response.
