Film Translation for Dubbing from the Perspective of Communicative Translation

——the Animated Film Series Kung Fu Panda as a Case Study

I. Introduction

Film, as a special audiovisual artistic form, has been playing its role of transmitting culture, entertaining and inspiring the general public since its birth. Nowadays, with advanced electronic technology, its receivers greatly outnumber that of traditional literature works. The imported film has been serving as a window through which ordinary people could get access to foreign cultures, but there exists a barrier lying in language. To overcome the language barrier, in China, most of the general people turn to Chinese dubbed films. Compared with literary translation, film translation, or rather dubbing translation, demands more probing and expanding research work by scholars and practitioners in the field of dubbing.

The film series, Kung Fu Panda, produced by Dream Works Animation, is a great success in combining Chinese culture and American spirits. It is about a panda named Po, a big fan of Kung Fu, who changes from a lazy clumsy slacker to a wise awesome Kung Fu master after taking a series of challenges. Well accepted by the audience of different cultures and backgrounds, it has become an immensely popular animated film worldwide, especially in China. Apart from the inspiring story and artistic animation, the film seriesrsquo; popularity is also attributed to its natural, fluent, humorous dubbing language.

II. Studies on film translation for dubbing abroad

In spite of being an essential branch of audiovisual translation, translation for dubbing does not receive most scholarsrsquo; attention at first.
