toni morrison is one of the most important and prominent black american woman writers, who first got the nobel prize in literature. in addition, she also won the 1978 national book award for fiction, pulitzer prize in literature and the 1996 national book foundation's medal of distinguished contribution to american letters and so on.

tar baby (1981) is the fourth novel of morrison, and she became the first african-american woman who was selected as the cover person of time magazine which was a milestone in the career of morrison. tar baby tells a love story between son and jadine. this seemingly unusual love story can be deemed as a typical miniature of contemporary american society. in terms of real life, this situation is not common, but the inherent national and cultural tension it reveals is an enduring and universal topic to mankind.
